FLYERS

WORDS
Dean Sherry
From Analog Rhythms discussion panel
“I was only 19, and I didn’t know what Shaft was. I was on pirate radio, and someone called in and asked if I wanted to play there. I had no car. My dad dropped me in, and the door opened and the owner of Shaft was in a pair of leather chaps. And my dad just goes, ‘You’re not getting out of the car!’
“I had four boxes of records with me, and was like’, this is what I want to do!’. So I got out of the car, got the records, and went down the stairs – a straight man in a completely unknown environment.
“I loved it. I got to play records. I got to play records for seven to eight hours a night and that’s always what I wanted to do. It was such an amazing club – it was going all the way through the 80s as a little fringe environment, and then all of a sudden everyone was copping on to it and going down there because they had a 6am licence.”
